Assignment #1
Assignment #1
Should it be done?
•Who would read/use my material?
I see the readers being used in extensive reading for elementary and middle school students here in Korea.
•Why? What would they gain from it?
They woud gain being able to read authentic material that is, nevertheless, set in their own cultural mileu and thus accessible in terms of context and content, which would aid in understanding the meaning.
•What are they currently using or reading instead?
Currently, most of the books being used are either from America and graded for USA standards, or are books such as the Harry Potter series which are only accessible for the highest level students.
•Why do I think my material (or idea) is good?
Because since it was written I've used it a couple of times with students who were struggling to read and it has always been met with interest and comments about easy it was to read.

Oh, are you working on readers? Great idea. I've just started publishing a series of readers, so this interests me a lot. And it's a great type of material for both ebooks and paperbacks.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteLeonie - they're beautiful! Just a thought... I recently gave a course on Extensive Reading and learned from teachers in Asia about the numerous free materials there, such as the Oxford Owl series and the MReader (which is full of comprehension tests - not my idea of ER, but popular all the same). Would those clash in any way with your product? Would yours be worth uploading onto MReader? Just thinking aloud...!
ReplyDeleteKate - I am aware of those, but they are firmly set in America/England/Europe and offer little for the Korean students. This series was written with the Korean students in mind, to use things they are familiar with as the background.
ReplyDeleteYes. You're right about them being set in the USA/UK. I was shocked at how little attention some of them had paid to the local situation. I'm really enjoying seeing your materials - such beautiful stories and drawings.
